Rainbow Falls (Waianiwaniwa) is one of Northland's most spectacular and accessible waterfalls. Located just a 5-minute drive from Kerigold Chalets, this 27-meter waterfall offers visitors multiple viewing platforms, walking tracks, and swimming opportunities. The waterfall is particularly impressive after rain, when the volume of water creates a misty rainbow effect that gives the falls their name.
About Rainbow Falls
Part of the Kerikeri River, Rainbow Falls thunders over ancient basalt lava flows that were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. The waterfall's Māori name, Waianiwaniwa, means "Waters of the Rainbow," referring to the spectacular rainbow effects often visible in the spray, especially during sunny afternoons.
Did You Know?
The distinctive columnar basalt formations visible behind the waterfall were created when lava cooled and contracted, forming these hexagonal-shaped pillars. Local Māori have long considered this area significant, and the falls played an important role in early European settlement of the region.
